Poor Little It Girl is a shopping and personal style blog by me, Cathy Anderson, with a focus on petite fashion and keeping things affordable. My mission is to show that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to find quality items to stay stylish.
Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Cathy attended Florida State University (Chi Omega – Gamma, pledge class 2003) and quickly made her way to Manhattan after graduation to follow her passion for the fashion industry. While there, she did editorial work for such major books as People StyleWatch, CosmoGirl, and J-14 magazine, where she assisted on countless editorial photo shoots, wrote about the latest teen heartthrobs, and developed her keen eye for achieving great style while on a budget.
After four years of city life, she launched her own personal style blog, Poor Little It Girl in 2010, and moved to Atlanta to work as the Style Editor for Atlanta Magazine in 2011. While living in Atlanta, Cathy reconnected with her college sweetheart, Adam, and moved to be with him in Washington, DC in 2013, where they lived for three years. This past summer, the couple moved back to Atlanta, GA to be closer to family and start on a new adventure.
Since it’s start in 2010, Poor Little It Girl has been named one of PEOPLE magazine’s “Most Stylish Blogs”, highlighted as a Washingtonian Style Setter, interviewed for domnio.com and stylemepretty.com and featured in the March 2016 print editions of People StyleWatch and Seventeen Magazine.
In addition to Poor Little It Girl, Cathy currently serves as co-founder of The Blog Societies, which is one of the largest blogger networking community across the country. This past summer they held their 4th annual Blog Societies Conference in Charleston, SC.
(And yes, my post titles are lyrics from some of my favorite songs!)
Nothing gives me more joy than when my readers ask me about my life and my blog. From the serious to silly, y’all always surprise me with what you want to know! Here are few of the most frequently asked questions I get:
What platform do you use to host your blog? I have used WordPress since I started my blog in 2010.
Why are all of your post titles song lyrics? I have always been a music fanatic and I particularly pay attention to the lyrics of songs. From the super sad to the cheery and happy…I love finding a song which lyrics perfectly pertain to a certain time/experience in my life. I use song lyrics I love to title my posts as a way to combine my two favorite things: fashion and music!
What magazines did you work at in New York City? My first magazine job was at Women’s Health as the Publisher’s Assistant. After that I worked in the fashion department at CosmoGIRL, J-14 and People StyleWatch.
Why did you decide to start Poor Little It Girl™? I’ve always had a passion for Under $100 shopping. Working at CosmoGIRL, J-14 and People StyleWatch, I learned a lot about the “mall brands” and how to find quality pieces that don’t cost a lot of money. I finally started Poor Little It Girl™ in July 2010 as an outlet to express my personal views on affordable style.
When you do decide to spend over $100 on an item, what is your biggest splurge? When I do dive a little deeper into my wallet on an item, it usually revolves around denim. Whether it’s a great jacket or the perfect pair of jeans, I want something that will last forever and not stretch out a ton throughout the day…so that usually means having to spend a bit more on the good stuff. I’d also say I occasionally splurge on a great dress because, why not!
What is your advice to someone who wants to start a blog? In the six years I’ve been blogging, there are a lot of things I’ve learned along the way. Here are a few of the most important tips I can give: 1) Post often – People need to know that they can get new content when they come to your blog each day. I post 5 days a week consistently. 2) If someone can do it better than you, let them – In no way can I claim I do everything alone for Poor Little It Girl™, I have an amazing support team that helps me get things together. I have hired professionals to work on my site (my current design is done by White Oak Creative) and I work with local photographers for my outfit posts.. If you want your readers and people in the industry to take your seriously, then it’s important to invest in making it the best possible blog you can by having a great team. 3) Have fun – At the end of the day I blog because I love it and it makes me happy. Don’t take it so seriously. If you hate a post, delete it. If you made a mistake, learn from it and move on. It’s not that deep. You can learn WAY more about my tips on blogging in my “How To Be A Better Blogger” series!
Where did you go to college and what did you study? I graduated from Florida State University in 2007 with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Business. I was also a proud member of the Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega fraternity.
Besides fashion, what else do you do for fun? I love fashion and style, but it is in no way my entire life. I love to cook (i.e watch Food Network/Cooking Channel), cheer on my Seminoles during football season, attend local festivals (specifically ones that revolve around beer and food), and taking Pure Barre on the regular.
How tall are you? I’m 4’11. Hence the focus on petite fashion!
