There are always some fashion combos that people are scared of mixing: prints, black and navy, and most certainly denim and denim. I solved your mixing prints question here, a black and navy “How To” will be in the coming future, so today I thought I’d focus on the dreaded Denim On Denim pairing.
D.O.D can be tough, I admit it, but once you know the rules of how to mix the same fabric (without looking like Debbie Gibson singing “Electric Youth”) then it can be oh so easy! The #1 rule for this pairing is to make sure one denim is in a lighter wash, and one is darker. Personally, I prefer my dark denim on the bottom and lighter denim at the top, so that it draws attention towards the face (which y’all know is my favorite piece of advice to give on fashion).
Since this is most if y’alls first time diving into the D.O.D world (don’t be scared!) I decided to show you two easy jeans and top combos where wearing an all denim outfit is not only simple but oh so chic! Finding great denim separates and adding some killer accessories will really get you noticed for your D.O.D style!
Printed Denim Top and Skinny jeans – Don’t be afraid of a printed denim top. This one here from Topshop, while denim, can easily be paired with a denim bottom since it is really looks so much like a normal cotton blouse. The light wash of the floral print goes perfectly with a pair of crop skinny jeans. I love the idea of taking this look to the hipster level with the addition of a great pair of nerdy reader glasses, functional flats and an awesome bag.
Boyfriend Jeans and Chambray Shirt – This is the easiest way to start introducing D.O.D into your wardrobe. Just taking an ordinary chambray shirt (I LOVE how acid washed this one from J.Crew is) and pairing it with distressed boyfriend jeans is casual and fun. For an even more edgy and laid back style, do the frat tuck with your shirt. (Frat Tuck: taking the front of your shirt and tucking it in slightly to your jeans and leaving the back untucked.)
